5 Natural Remedies for Your Dog’s Itchy Skin

Are you one of the many dog owners out there who feels helpless when your dog starts scratching? Especially in springtime, when those spring allergies hit – you wish you could do something to give them some relief!

Dogs have itchy skin for a number of reasons, the most common of which is allergies. Allergies could be a result of food or the environment. If you feel like your dog’s allergies are environmental, and flare up when the spring pollen and allergens come out, check out this list of natural remedies to try:

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar has been a home remedy used for centuries. It contains acetic acid, which helps reduce inflammation caused by allergies. It also has antibacterial properties that can help keep harmful bacteria away from your dog’s skin.

To Use: Mix one part organic apple cider vinegar with three parts water in a spray bottle and then apply directly onto their affected areas 2 – 3 times per day (or as recommended by a veterinarian). Never use on an open wound or cut.

2. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, which has anti-inflammatory benefits and has been known to have benefits for skin and coat health. Coconut oil also contains Vitamin E, which is a much-needed nutrient for protecting, repairing and preserving the skin.

To Use: You can apply it topically and orally. Topically, combine organic unrefined coconut oil with water at a ratio of one to three and spray on your dog’s coat and work it in. You can also add a teaspoon to their meals to give them the health boost.

3. Turkey Tail Mushrooms

Turkey tail mushrooms have been used for centures in ancient Chinese medicine.

They contain polysaccharide-K (PSK), which has been found to reduce inflammation caused by allergies. It also boosts immunity and helps to reduce allergic reactions caused by pollen or other environmental allergens. In addition, the antioxidants found in these fungi can help protect cells from damage due to free radicals.

To Use: Find a high-quality supplement made from the fruit of the mushroom to get the most health benefits. Follow dosing amounts on the specific packaging (feed it orally).

4. Nettle

Nettle leaf tea has been used for centuries to fight allergies. It contains natural antihistamines which can provide relief from itching and other allergy symptoms. Tannins in this tea have astringent properties that can reduce inflammation caused by allergic reactions.

Studies have even shown that nettle leaf may be able to block histamine production – something that often worsens allergy symptoms.

To Use: Nettle leaf tea is best applied externally, so brew up a cup, allow it to cool and then rub it gently into any part of your dog’s coat.

5. Quercetin

Also known as ‘nature’s benadryl’, quercetin has been shown to have antihistamine properties that help to relieve itchy skin and allergies. It’s a naturally occurring compound found in foods, particularly in apples and apple skins. For a full list of fruits your dog can eat, check out this.
